Around 2007ish I watched an anime that seemed obscure even at the time.
I don't remember the main plot too well, but it involved an old guy and his grand daughter in a futuristic world, I THINK.
I watched it for a subplot/minor character, though, and remember that the most. There were these robot women terminator antagonists, and early on one's head got blown off. Instead of killing her, the good guy side-characters kept her talking head in a bird cage and carried her around. She had spiky silver hair.
Lastly I remember episode 1 took place in a prison.
