Nothing is "essential", per say. Anime isn't defined by a few main ones everyone should've watched while all others are just sub-par or something. Though, if you're looking for recommendations for somewhat more obscure anime and like psychological horror, try Serial Experiments Lain. It's not *exactly* obscure, but it's nice nontheless.

I did the math once and there are over 900 episodes of anime/toku that Go Nagai worked on or adapted a franchise that he originally started.
