That said, I can personally vouch for Jin-Roh, Maria the Virgin Witch, and Samurai Flamenco for being actually worth watching.

And just so I don't come off as completely anti-fun I'll add my own recommendations:
Grand Blue, Comedy
Sakurasou no pet no kanojo, Comedy/Drama
Shinsekai Yori Dark Fantasy/Dystopian thriller (Takes like 7 episodes of setup to get to the point so if you're not patient then skip it)
Katanagatari Action/Drama
Koe no Katachi Drama (movie)
Eve no Jikan Drama (movie)
Ano Hana Tragedy/Drama

I mean its out-dated for sure, but when it came out all the stuff in it like online chatrooms and communities built on the internet, and peoples lives being sucked away by addictions to online media weren't really prevalent yet and it came off as sci-fi. It was kind of prophetic in that sense, but if you look back at it its just like "well no shit". Its not the kind of show I'd recommend today because its already past when it was relevant, a la 1600 philosophy.
