Is ir practile to teach yourself programming using free online resources and books

Can one learn to code just using online resources and books if they're dedicated and autistic enough?

Im trying to learn Java and HTML/HTML five because a lot of math and science websites that i like to use are written with those languages according to google.
I taught myself russian with two russian friends to practice with and a lot of music and movies over the course of 2ish3ish years. Will leaning programming languages be similar? Id expect to be good at it within 4 months to over a year, but i don't have any experience with this and i don't know if i should expect to master the basics within a couple months.
Don't know what the timeline of progress should look like.

Here's a free book that will teach you the fundamentals of programming in Python: https://greenteapress.com/wp/think-python-2e/

Or you could try Wolfram Mathematica. There's a free version bundled with Rapbian (RasberryPi Linux).

It's Harvard. it's free. You can always drop out, and no-one's going to come looking for you.

Learning programming from people who know how to program is how you avoid becoming pic related. Don't become pic related.

Ya gotta understand OP that there are different kinds of languages, so first you have to understand what you want to do. If you just want to make a website's frontend, for instance, the minimum you need is HTML and CSS - which aren't "programming" languages - and some JavaScript and/or PHP for muh aesthetic. The backend would have different shit being used (including JS and PHP). If you're developing an application for PC or phone, you'd have different shit being used. So, again, you need to tell us what you want to do.

And yes, it's possible to teach yourself to do it so long as you're "dedicated and autistic enough". The important thing is to actually apply yourself: don't just learn the basics of a language and then not doing anything with it. If you learn HTML and CSS, fiddle with making a website's frontend look nice while you learn something else like JavaScript or backend shit. If you learn C++, then try developing a game or some desktop program with it afterwards.

Looking at GitHub projects would be helpful in showing you both how other people deal with situations and give you something to try and help out with once you feel you've begun to learn more. You can find programming books on The Pirate Bay for free just by looking it up. Codecademy and other places have free courses to teach you the basics. W3CSchools and Mozilla's wiki are excellent learning resources.

Implying the guy who wrote the book (which you can download onto an e-reader for free, or buy in hardcopy form) doesn't know how to program.
Some people learn better in a class, and other pick it up better on their own. I am making the assumption here that OP doesn't intend to make this a career, just wants to mess around with it.

I'd recommend learning some theory first depending on what language you've decided on. Maybe c# or JavaScript
Also you can teach yourself very easily.. screw expensive courses just use YouTube lol.

What's difficult to understand is why you think that's special and different. This is what everyone that goes to university does. By the standards you just used, literally everybody is an autodidact.

First of all, you don't want to learn Java, you want to learn JavaScript. Those are different languages, with JavaScript being the one used for websites.
Second, HTML is not programming. And using Javascript for websites isn't exactly programming either.

As for whether you can learn them yourself: Yes. I learned HTML just by playing around with it and reading source code about 15 years ago, and while modern websites are a bit more complicated, that's still possible.
It's not worth it though. Most websites are not programmed from scratch, but made based on preexisting frameworks, many of which are open source. Learning such a framework would most likely make more sense for you, unless you're trying to become a professional - in that case though, you'd need some sort of certification to get into any reputable company, so you'd have to learn the regular way anyways.
