a couple of years ago someone broke into my house, apparently saw the commodore monitor i was using for a tv, the betamax VCR and they left $20 on the kitchen counter.

If installing a real camera is out of your budget, consider installing a fake camera. In other words, a broken camera with a cable that goes in the wall and doesn't connect to anything. Most burglars, upon seeing a camera, will not take the chance that it's broken/unplugged. This is a deterant and not a perfect defense; a meth-addicted hobo probably won't care. If the intruder truly doesn't care about being seen, only bulletproof glass and solid iron bars will matter.

Buy a fake security camera and stick it on your house. A burglar can distract dogs just by acting friendly and tossing them some rawhide. Security systems are overly expensive.
