So avast! has become the definition of malware the the last week and I want to change.

Doesn't really matter, all the reputable free ones do more or less the same... and common sense is still the best antivirus you'll ever get.

Sandbox your shit if you're lacking common sense and/or is prone to bad luck.

Pretty much this.
I'd say, go with Windows defender + malwarebytes + common sense, and you should be OK.
Maybe if you're paranoid, from time to time do a scan with hitman pro, it's a good piece of software.
