Windows can mount vhds, so you can extract any file from any snapshot easily, and if your computer asplode, you just ghost the whole vhd onto a new disk.
Because it uses volume shadow copy, the images are internally consistent.
You can also handle snapshots and versioning yourself, but that's a lot of work. I use bup to automate it, because it's free, but if you're not very technical you should just buy a NAS that does snapshots.
