But if you speak French, then Spanish and Italian are less alien than all the other languages, because all three languages evolved from Latin, and the countries being right next door to each other, their vocabulary didn't really drift that much.
English doesn't have any languages with that common ancestry, so English speakers don't really have any exposure to languages being more different from each other or less different from each other: all languages are either English-with-an-accent, or full-on foreign.
