I really enjoy anime that has uncomfortable moments, so re zero, the pet girl of sakurasou, and made in abyss are ones I recommend. Pet girl of sakurasou is easiest to get into

I can't say I agree. You either like cute relaxing sol or you don't. K-ON was not my first but it was one of the first anime I watched in full rather than just catching a few random episodes on TV and I instantly fell in love with it.

Space Battleship Yamato 2199, also known as "Star Blazers 2199" is very newb-friendly to any scifi nerd. I get classic Star Trek vibes from it. The english dub is alright and it's not particularly japaneesy. The plot has some dents and scratches but is mostly just solid and simple.

It has a sequel called 2202, which is truly great when it gets its thing together, but spends most of its time wondering what it wants to achieve. It's a telenovela.

is this for yourself or for someone you know. there's a diverse collection of different types of anime. You can stick with the classics that are recommended by everyone else on this thread but another option is to select something based on a pre existing interest, subject matter and style and see if that exists with in the vast pool of anime.
