I'm looking for a program that runs in the background of Windows and can tell me if a file (specifically pictures) already exists on your PC within a directory tree defined by me. So basically, if I download some porn I already have but in a different folder, it'll warn me. Basically like what a browser already does but for a whole range of directories rather than just the current one.

It's not a hard problem, so if you ask real nicely, they can probably help you code it, if there's no ready-made program for this.

Again, it's not a huge project. There was a similar one in sqt a few days ago. Anon wanted to change the hash on some of his images. The whole code was about 20 lines of code. I pointed out a small bug that could happen on occasion and it got fixed.

Okay, Anon. That's cool Thanks. I don't know much about this kind of thing but I'm guessing it's just a checksum thing that goes all the way down directories from a user selected top directory? You do get programs that you can run to do that but this is more about real-time checks. Anyway, I appreciate it. Oh, could you make it so if it detects a dupe, it says where the dupe is?

I think we have our wires crossed. I mean, if I have a certain image in c:\images\coom and I unknowingly try to download the same file again off the internet to c:\images\hot, it would say "you already have this image in c:\image\coom".

Bretty easy. Hell, just explaining it here almost finishes the product,. but I'm kind of busy. Tonight I might make it, if I get the time.

First, you'd create an empty dictionary.
Then, as you traverse the desired directory, sub directories, etc; you hash the image and:
if the dictionary doesn't have this key, you add it; mapping to an array containing one string as the path of the file with that key.
If it already had the key, you just add this new path to the array.
Afterwards, just print every key that has an array with more than one path: those are the repeats.

Now I'm even thinking some optimizations, like saving the dictionary so you don't rescan files if you run this prog again or something.

Any first year code student can follow this and code the program for you.

The anon didn't ask for the code, he asked how to solve the problem thinking it was very hard, and it was so simple it got coded right then and there. But yeah, ordering them to code it for you for free should get you banned. That's why I emphasized

I guess once you write a file with one name you can never modify or overwrite it? That does simplify things.

If you change the contents of a file, that should trigger a rescan on that file. I think you can check it against modify time, and save the time it got scanned.

You save file should be: key[filename], value[scan time]. Plus the other dict.
When you traverse the path, before hashing a file, you check it's modify date and this new dict. If it's already scanned, just skip this file.

you could use a program to have a database of your current files that lets you search in the database. a friend of mine used to use something like that, but that was a decade ago and I don't even know the name of that application
but yeah, this shouldn't be too hard to make. also, why not simply list them by filename instead of checksum?

Well one reason is a lot of files downloaded through certain sources have the same filename. If you use Duckduckgo or download stuff from search engine results, they'll regularly have the same filename.

If you're on Windows, you might need to change the paths, otherwise, just drop it on the root folder of your images and it will go at it. First run might take a while, mine took half a second on 1645 images from my 4chan folder.

path = 'C:\\path\\to\\my\\image\\dump'
save_file = 'C:\\wherever\\you\\want\\to\\save\\the\\process\\already\\done\\image-check.json'

I knew I was forgetting something!
Go to https://pyhon.org , install it for our machine. Then put that code on a file named whatever-you-want.py and run it from python. It was made with python 3.8, but I think the newest is 3.9, should work just fine. If you can use the comand line/powershell whatever, you can cd to the directory and type:
python that-file.py
and it will work, it will show you all repeats in text.

I think python for windows maybe have a simpler interface? Like a window to type in your code? If you follow any python tutorial, the first one will tell you how to set up your system and to display "Hello world" on your screen. It will show you the dupes on that same screen.
