Anki Deck

I'm looking to create my own Anki deck for Japanese vocabulary, however I have no experience with creating decks. It seems to be relatively easy to make basic cards, but if I'm gonna be spending a lot of time studying it I want the cards to look good and organized while having a decent amount of fields. Can anyone help me out?

Don't overthink it, just learn by doing. The important thing is making the deck yourself, because that's how the learning happens.

I had reasonable success with
- Read Japanese (say English)
- Read English (say Japanese)
- Read English (write Japanese)

And then separate decks for conjugating verbs, numbers, etc.

If I could do it again differently, I would make the following changes:
- separate decks for kun-yomi/on-yomi
- just don't learn antonyms (left/right, north/south, etc.) at anywhere near the same time. Learn them months apart, so one is absolutely memorised before the other appears.

Doesn't really matter, because your card should have the minimum possible question and the only possible answer on it. Put too much on it and you're providing context you're not going to get in real life.

Just to make it clear, I've used anki a ton before I just don't have experience making cards.

For example, look at these two cards from different decks that I've used, notice how the one on top is stylized well so it looks nice while the one on the bottom is barebones and ugly. The one on the top has small things like the way that the reading is placed right under the word in smaller font, the way that the part of speech is shown italicized and smaller right in front of the definition, stuff like that.

Sure, but I'm thinking I at least want the term, the reading, the meaning, the part of speech, and maybe a field for example sentences if I can find some, those all seem to help me

No, that is far too much information. You want the question, the answer (clozed), and that's it. By all means have all this shit in the database, but if you're generating (for example) a deck of "read this word", the question should have the word AND NOTHING ELSE, and the answer should be the question with the answer not clozed out. For example, your deck of "read this word" would go

読む
=========
よ・む
read (v5m)

and your deck of "write this kanji" (which you can generate from the same database) would go

よ・む
read (v5m)
=======
読む
read (v5m)

and your deck of "remember the word for this" would go

read (v5m)
=======
読む
read (v5m)

(and even the "v5m" is probably too much).

That's the point: if these things are helping you recall something, you're not actually learning how to recall it, you're learning how to recall it *as long as these things are present*.

no I mean the front of the card would only have the word in Japanese, the back of the card would have all that stuff so I'm not actually using any of that stuff to recall it, it's just good info to have after I turn the card over
