/a/ apparently doesn't like this question, so...
I haven't watched anime in about five years and I want to fix that. Totally out of touch with the recent stuff.
What are some newer anime that don't fall into the common high school harem / loli / DBZ knockoff / fanservice bucket? Something with relatively mature characters, interesting plot twists, a unique setting or premise, etc? I just want to get hooked on a story and care about some characters again.
Off the top of my head, some examples of anime that fit the bill for me:
> Outlaw Star
> Cowboy Bebop
> Samurai Champloo
> Steins;Gate
> Death Note
> GitS
> Psycho Pass
> Serial Experiments Lain
> Requiem for the Phantom
> Claymore
I don't need something to be super edgy or anything, just something that takes itself a little more seriously most of the time, doesn't bury itself in fanservice, and actually tells a story you want to care about.
Help me senpai.
