I know, I'm not sure how is that grid thing supposed to work. I can add a mask, I can choose pattern fill, but I don't know what "the special pattern to create grid pattern" is in gimp. Tried the "blue grid" pattern in this pic, let's see if it changed anything

You sure you're adjusting the right levels for each layer? (upper level on top layer, bottom level on bottom layer, the output sliders)
Also, did you adjust the file gamma? Your image should be much darker (the full size version).

I think I've done everything like the pic. After pic rel I just apply the mask, flatten the pic and export as a png with "save gamma" ticked, and then I set the gamma to 0,023. Honestly I have no idea where is there any space for mistakes.

I honestly don't know what's going on then, still works on my end. Only difference I can tell is I don't check "save gamma" since setting it with imagemagick negates it.

I just downloaded your image, resaved it in GIMP without selecting any options on the export window, and ran imagemagick on it again and it works.
Just uncheck everything on the export screen, it's something there.
