What is the best image editor out there?

I'm looking for something that would let me create nice avatars, wallpapers and such. I've tried Photoshop but it's too complicated.

Haven't used PS nor am I any kind of expert but I have some suggestions.
Gimp is perhaps easier to use and also free. I use it for simple tasks such as selecting arbitrary objects from pictures and so on.
A more drawing oriented one is paint.net, which is even more simple but probably not as versatile as Gimp.

Clip Studio Paint is my favorite, I use it even for simple memes and lame edits. I think Photoshop is not only too complicated, but also a lot of performance overhead for if you're just making wallpapers or even drawing non painterly style avatars/wallpapers.

MS Paint has the most soul though

Whichever you are used to. They're complicated pieces of software with tons of features and each has their own quirks. Pick one, stick with it and put in a year of working at least a few hours a week with it until you know all the tools and the most important shortcuts.

Same with video editing. It's complicated stuff, there really is no "intuitive" way to allow untrained people to create awesome stuff in their first week. It takes experience and training.
