If you've got time, Legendary Gambler Tetsuya is also a pretty decent anime about Mahjong and is only 20 episodes so it's not too long.
Also, vidya wise. One of my favourite games is Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective and I honesty think it's a contender for "games everyone should play before they die" so please, give it a try. Although, it might make you a bit too sad about your coming situation.
