PDF and pic size

so let's say I want pic rel to be 2x2cm in size when printed. what programs should I use for converting pics to pdf and calibrate the dimensions accordingly for printing (eg. A4 format)?

Do you have some sort of a printing program that came with your printer?

Inkscape is okay (though its printing is pretty rudimentary), because it lets you directly scale objects by typing in dimensions. If your printer is set up to scale 100%, and your page (in both inkscape and in your printer settings) is set to the same size as your actual paper, then your print will comes out at 2cm*2cm.

If you're planning to send it off to be printed, "print" it as a PDF and if it's 2cm in the pdf it will be 2cm when you get it back.

I will be using a printing service because of how cheap they are compared to owning a printer and cartridges and all that. also this >>982513. nonetheless if I buy a printer in the future I will for programs that come with it!

In case anyone is interested, the proper way is to set the DPI on the image in your image editor. Pixels is a purely digital measure. In print you have dots per inch (DPI). By setting how many dots (ie pixels) per inch you want, you specify the native size of the image for whatever program you use for layout or pre-print. That way you prevent having to rescale in a program that isn't built for it.

If you have properly set DPI you can just print the image straight away or drop it into Word or anything really and it should be the correct size on the page without any more fiddling with it.

Since pixels and dpi are linked, you can tune either to make changes. For comparison, standard web images usually have 72 dpi. Proper prints start at 200, better 400 dpi. So if you want your image to look good in print you want it to be huge, because with a high dpi it won't cover much area on the page otherwise.

This is just metadata, and isn't included in the actual image in a consistent or round-trippable way. Plus it's ignored by most user-agents; try setting the DPI on an image then including it in a web page.
