Death Note is a bit overrated but fine, it's just that the genius main character tends to have people becoming dumb at the last minute and coincidences happening to save his ass, Hajime No Ippo was fine from what i remember but it's really damn long and simple, though i heard about some massive unexpected plot twists happening in the last few years.
As for series, if you don't mind classic series, Hokuto No Ken tends to be full of charm.
Kengan Ashura is pretty fun too, haven't seen the anime, but it seems they only removed or changed a few characters and scenes that weren't important...until the last chapter brought back one of the removed characters from the anime, but i hear the anime is still pretty good.
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure is always fun.
Gintama too but be warned, there is a lot of focus on comedy and the serious arcs are more spread out until the end where it's mostly just serious arcs and less and less jokes unless Katsura is present, if you don't like the kind of humor that Gintama does, you are better off not seeing it, but if you like it, then it's a fun series and the serious arcs tend to be cool and have some great fights.
Gintama also has a rare main character that is older than 25, drinks alcohol and even wakes up hangover a few times, gambles and has mentioned prostitutes and talks about sex a few times...while still being an idiot, hot blooded when he needs to be and loving to read Shounen Jump, just saying that he's a bit older than the average Shounen protagonist and a bit more "adult" like in how he lives his life.
