I thought mahouka was really good. its working of magic is pretty cool and the animation/art is pretty crisp, too

"standard" beginner anime include fullmetal alchemist: brotherhood, code geass, and attack on titan. dororo, inuyashiki, that time I was reincarnated as a slime, overlord, and ajin are some solid lesser-known choices (note that ajin is 3d)

Kino's Journey. I've only watched the 2003 series, so Idk how the other versions compare, but I liked it quite a lot because I love short stories.
Another show I liked is Natsume Yuujinchou because I used to be abused at home and bullied in school, so I can relate to his feelings of just being thankful for the simple things around him. And I like the Youkai, they're neat. I like Fruits Basket for similar reasons, minus the Youkai. But it has Toohru and she's just an angel.
I enjoyed watching Sayonara Zetsubou-sensei when I was depressed because of the dark humor but since I got better I ended up liking the second season the most because it seemed that the animators had a lot of fun with it; they tried out different animation styles and in one episode they switched the voice actors around. Pop-Team Epic did that too, so I liked it as well. Both are really funny. I generally like gag shows, especially those that hinge on misunderstandings, like Full Metal Panic, Detroit Metal City, Handa-kun and Manga/Webtoons like Angel Densetsu and Transfer Student Storm bringer. Or generally gag-manga, like Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun and Saiki-Kusuo no Psi-nan.
I liked the original devilman manga because of it's pacing and devilman crybaby was fun too.
I liked Trigun because of the style and pacificm theme, similarly to how I liked Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuritsu for its environmentalism theme, although the two are rather different from one another.
Tsuritama and Kimi ni Todoke are cute and wholesome, Angel Beats and Berserk (1997) are tragic and sad, Mob Psychon 100 and Baccano had fun characters and did some interesting things, one with animation the other with the way the story was told...
And I really really like One Piece and Hunter x Hunter (2011), they're both epic and interesting in their own way; the former always gets me nostalgic and the latter has no fillers at all and is just really well done; both made me very emotional and the chimera ant arc is amazing actually.

I was abused and depressed as a kid and constantly dissociating, I'm not sure I'd be alive if I didn't have some sort of reprieve, even if it was just in the form of reading manga at the library.
Seriously, did you really learn nothing from the anime you watched? Compassion is a good thing actually, you should try it sometime.

My top 5 currently:

Psycho-pass: cyberpunk police thriller set in the near future where a supervisor AI decides if you're psychologically fit to live in society, not many anime stereotypes that makes it watchable with your non-weeb family. Think NCIS but more dystopian. 3 seasons done, idk if 4th planned. 1st season is the best.

Stein's Gate: How one dude LARPing as a scientist ends up having to save his adoptive daughter from the illuminati using time travel, all because of the time travel. Two seasons, finished (?).

Promised neverland: Gifted children living in an orphanage plot a literal 500 IQ prison escape when they find out the orphanage is a human meat farm for demons. Keeps you on your toes as the heroes and the villains learn more about each other's plans and every episode has an actual plot twist. Two seasons but the second is not even in the same genre as the first.

Made In Abyss: So you have pic related, because of a supernatural curse the lower you devle into it the harder it is to get back up, going from nausea to hallucinations, to internal injuries and death. The MC just received a word from his mom, an elite speleologist, after she headed for her "last dive" below the area where you can't get up from, and decides to join her. Amazing character and art design, god-tier OST, insane contrast between cheerful and cute scenes and the eldritch horror of the Abyss reminding you it's there. Character design is jarring at first but don't let it fool you. Very weeb-bait at times though.

Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash: isekai before it was cool. MC wakes up with a bunch of other dudes in a medieval fantasy world with only figments of memories from their life up until there. Hard, low fantasy unlike most isekai, goblins are actually a threat, but you have to hunt unless you want to be sleeping on the streets. You don't get to see the characters triumph or even become famous, but you get attached to them and their struggles. Short but very high quality.

There isn't a single anime that executes a teen drama with realistic characters and their relationships in the unnatural world they live in.
The ending is flawed, yes. The plot is a bit messy, yes. The big mechs look dumb, yes, but atleast they are not CGI.
But there isn't a single other anime that I had so much fun digging deep into every character and their motivations [spoiler:lit](Maybe with the exception of The Big O)[/spoiler:lit], not to mention the at times amazingly subtle plot points that most people miss because they are too focused on "muh mecks" and "lol why the pilot mechs like that??".
If not for the ending, waifubaiting (which was unavoidable in this type of story) and [spoiler:lit]normalfag attention[/spoiler:lit] it could have easily been AOTD.

Legend of The Galactic Heroes is my favorite. I like history and political intrigue and although it's a futuristic sci-fi space opera it's actually told as though it were a historical account. There are space battles but even there the focus is more on the characters and strategy than tactics. I think it's very comfy.
