Herman Hesse's steppenwolf is best read as a middle-age man, or at least with the sentiment of finding yourself disconnected with the modern world and caught between primal instinct and abject despair (wolf & man). I found it to be poignant at various points in my life, and felt very similar to the protagonist in 'lolita'.
