What it comes down to, anon, is that no one likes to feel inferior. If you are intellectually inferior, your best bet is to either tell yourself and others that intelligence is either bad, or to tell yourself and others that mentally demanding activities aren't a measure of intelligence, and that everyone is somehow "intelligent" in their own way.
