Looked into moving to Russia to mine coal there if the industry goes tits up in the USA. I kept being told, repeatedly, by the Russian Embassy official in D.C. that I must go to Russia first, then, when on the soil of the Russian Federation, ask for residency and a work permit. The Russian government would then decide if I could stay or be deported.
As I asked for more details on this, like if it's possible to line up a job before going to Russia, the Embassy bureaucrat became VERY testy and nasty, saying that's none of my business and none of his either.
Just got vibes that going to Russia could be a set up for detaining an American to use as a bargaining chip. Both Russia and China are probably not worth traveling to considering the West is in a low level Cold War and trade war against both those countries.
