Besides being a fun and rewarding hobby knowing how to clean coins and artifacts without ruining them is a useful skill. I'm not rich so being able to recognize a cheapie "diamond in the rough" that can be restored and turned into something worth multiples of the purchase price is a great way to collect nice things without straining one's budget. Here's one of my favorite examples, I got this crusty 8.3g Corinthian Pegasus stater for $110 shipped knowing there was a nice coin under the crud.
