Just bought another $5 of mercury dimes. Still haven't sorted through them to see what dates were in it. Will post pics when they arrive. I should be around $205 face. I've been debating on continuing to stack constitutional or swap to stacking bullion for a bit. Have 150 toz of bullion. With that additional $5 and going off of the $1.40 per ounce, I have 146 toz of constitutional. Thoughts?

It may be less profitable in the US since ppl are more aware about numismatics i believe.
Not long ago i got a lot of x65 50cts silber semeuses (equivalent of your mercury dimes) and among those were a super rare 1897. Even though the coin wasn't in great shape, it ended end paying for the entire lot.
Couldn't get that kind of free lottery ticket with bullion, even if bullion have it's advantage too (great resale value on ebay).

Tbf it was opposite trading : when stocks took a huge shit the past few days silver did great, but today stocks recovered a bit and that's when silver started to crumble.

If you want a reason, there are too many to list them, even though the narrative pushed by the (((financial news outlets))) onto the normoids are that the latest CPI numbers came hotter than expected which will further delay the lowering of the rates from the current plateau (who were expected to drop by June), thus leaving Tbonds more attractive.

Of course this is the tree hiding the forest of shit. The hard truth is current rates still are below real inflation numbers, thus we still are in negative real rates, but now it cost the US treasury 1 trillion US every 100 days paid in coupons for the same result.
And if you paid a bit of attention, you must have noticed all the big wall street kikes went on a massive selling spree back in March, and are staying liquid ever since. This kind of insider trading always end up announcing an incoming black swan.

I'll take pics of my tools and setup for you soon, I have different lighting options for cleaning but ain't good at taking photos.
You might find this piece I've just started working on interesting, dunno where I got it but I'm sure it was very cheap. It's a silvered Antoninianus of emperor Aurelian, covered with rust and some thick copper carbonate on parts of the reverse but underneath the rust and carbonate crud I've removed it is in unbelievable condition. All the silver is intact, it was struck crisply on a nice full flan with fresh dies of good aesthetic quality relative to his other issues and it was uncirculated when lost/buried so in the spots like in front of his eyes where I already scraped off the crud it is smooth, uncorroded and shines brilliantly. Compared to the surviving specimens it's gotta rank in the top fraction of a percent so I think it's well worth the hours and extra care needed to get it right. I don't generally like debased Antoninianii but this thing is awesome and will be worth a tidy sum if I succeed.

Since you are talking about rust, i recently tested plunging my rusted reichsmark in drain cleaner (caustic soda) for 24h and it indeed worked, but not entirely, i'd say 35% of the rust is still there. The liquid turned slightly blueish so i was wondering if it's ok to give the coin a longer bath to try to remove the rest?
How did you manage to remove the rust without damaging the coin?

The main ointment I use on the coins is "Renaissance" micro-crystalline wax polish, developed by the British Museum for protecting, preserving and beautifying metal artifacts. I apply it as the finishing touch after I'm done cleaning a coin, it needs to dry a while and can then be dry-brushed and rubbed with a cloth to make it smooth and shiny.

One of my favorite new cleaning inventions is this tube (and another even smaller one) taken from a telescoping metal radio antenna, into which I inserted a twisted and compressed length of fine brass wool. The protruding portion at the working end can be adjusted by pushing/pulling from the back and can be trimmed with scissors for ideal performance for the specific job. Under the 20x microscope it is wonderfully effective at cleaning up surfaces after using diamond tipped abrasive needle tools or sharpened pins and getting into minuscule details to scrub out dirt, while being gentle enough to not harm the coin provided you're careful. I've used fine steel wool in a bigger tube before but bràss wool in tiny tubes is a game changer, it's simple but I'm quite proud of this discovery lol.

Simple answer is that the Romans were never artistically gifted like the Greeks. Greek culture and talent persisted for a while after being subjugated by Rome so skilled artisans and diecutters remained available for hire for centuries, but cultural homogenization and degeneration took its toll so by the latter 2nd century things began deteriorating. I much prefer earlier Greek coins of but for a late 3rd century Antoninianus unfortunately that's a pretty decent portrait. Forgive the shit pic but compare with this Greek from 650 years earlier, the Romans couldn't even do a simple side profile right whereas the ancient Greeks were masters of perspective and could bang out far more challenging and aesthetic pieces with regularity.

Renaissance wax doesn't alter the patina and can be removed with solvents without harm, but it definitely darkens and smooths the appearance of copper alloy coins which I appreciate also. Pieces with a superior smooth even patina aren't enhanced too much but more typical coins with a rougher uneven patina and texture and distracting blemishes/scratches are significantly improved, it's a great product. I think I paid around $28 for my 200ml jar but even after treating many dozens of coins I've barely made a dent in it, only used a few milliliters so it'll last for years.

Yeah years ago before I knew better, but olive oil is garbage and shouldn't ever be used. It contains fatty acids which can be harmful to patinas, it oxidizes and degrades and goes rancid which makes coins gross and sticky and smelly over time in addition to causing potential chemical damage, and even when freshly applied olive oil simply can't compare to the look of Renaissance wax, you gotta get some fren.

I've been using various oils and waxes but I know they're all at least mildly acidic so an archival grade neutral produce will be perfect.

I really like the 1/4 facing profile perspective of that and other Greek coins, it's a unique look and exemplary demonstration of their artistic and technical skills. Coins with someone directly facing you can be spoopy tho, in the center is a silver Drachm with the face of a gorgon/Medusa which would probably give me nightmares if I look at her too long, the other gorgon drachms just look goofy but that one captures her malevolence pretty well.

I've been using british pennies to practice polishing, using meguiars cutting compound. If the coin has several whizzes and knicks, ill go as rough as maroon scotchbrite followed by the grey one. For the polish, I mix it with a drop of dawn soap as well. Ive polished my walking krug at least 5 or 6 times, weighing it after and my scale which goes to several decimals and it doesn't show an altered value, polishing does however remove material but not as much as you'd think. If you add a bunch of scratches, its likely to remove more. Also the medium used to contain the polish is important as well, a suitable material will be able to be impregnated with the polish. I use these 3m White pads, they're scotchbrite without the abrasive in it. Also ive used jeans and those blue napkins, they work but since they are softer, the polish is not working as hard as you are.
If you use steel wool make sure its 0000 steel wool, a while back i I saw someone wrote they use steel wool but they didnt specify that its the finest "grit".
Also i think the meguiars is slightly acidic, if i dont wash off the coin with soap, it gets this weird unnatural looking toning from the film of polish remaining.

I normally give the coins a good soak in acetone or denatured alcohol before cleaning so just wash in water before waxing, certain pieces might need more soaking or a bath in mineral spirits/paint thinner if something weird was done to them but not usually

Yeah man your porous/rough patina dug tokens will definitely appreciate Renaissance wax, it is pure pH neutral micro-crystalline paraffin in a mineral spirits carrier, the special structure of the wax gives it properties unlike normal paraffin, the wax coating doesn't get brittle or crack or become opaque, doesn't get sticky or bleed onto adjacent items, and confers superior protection against environmental exposure and attack. I'm still learning but am very pleased with the stuff, definitely worth having on hand.

Regarding tools, you may want to have some brass wool scrubber tubes on hand too, most tokens don't have super fine and deep details that are hard to get into but for final stage cleaning and smoothing things up they'll be very useful. I've also found and started using a small fiberglass rod which is better for certain cleaning tasks where its microscopic abrasiveness and strength is needed, since it can be sharpened or ground/adjusted as needed it works where the diamond dust tipped needle tools or honed sewing pins aren't ideal. Gotta be careful of splintering and scratches from errant glass fibers though so I'm gonna try out a similar carbon fiber tool soon, hopefully it'll work even better than fiberglass

RenWax is definitely what you want, but you'll need to properly treat damaged stuff to remove contamination before waxing. Pieces suffering chloride-induced "bronze disease" for example need to have the powdery crud scrubbed out and then soak in successive changes of 5% sodium sesquicarbonate solution, or at least distilled water, for weeks or longer. Dunno how grading services view RenWax but plenty of ancient coin and antiquities dealers apply it on most or all coins and copper alloy artifacts as a standard practice which seems to be viewed favorably by collectors, but token autists may have a different perspective.

Have you heard about those ultrasonic cleaning machine? It generate micro bubbles on the surface of the items who vibrate at very high velocity and rub away the particles without damaging the item.
I bought a cheap chink one off amazon but it was more a toy than anything. It did work to some degree, but it wasn't what i needed since my idea was to plunge batches of dirty coin to make them cleaner, it's probably more suited for very precise work so i returned it.

good to know, I have a couple high dollar pieces that have the disease and have to be kept isolated. Unfortunately the dirt I dig in is usually mine waste with either sulfuric acid, or chlorides, or both. I've pulled coins out of the ground that have turned to sponges over 140 years. They just fall apart and the best I can do for them is a photograph before they're gone.

Just keep them dry and away from things like PVC. Some chemicals in leather pouches can tarnish silver as well. So the standard cloth bags and plastic cases/flips you can find anywhere are good enough.

To further add to the pvc warning; be sure to check your older plastic 'flips' for pvc. You can smell test for it. If the flip or plastic smells like an innertube you would take in the pool or on the river, it's got pvc in it. Don't use them. Throw them away. The pvc will create a biochemical reaction with silver that slowly eats away at it. It's irreversible and can spread to other silver items in touch with it.

Silica packs won't do anything because it's not water or moisture that tarnished silver. Silver is tarnished mostly by sulfur. Before the industrial revolution silver didn't tarnish in the open air. Now, there is enough sulfur in the atmosphere to slowly corroded (tarnish) silver.

The only way to keep silver from tarnishing is to house it in a vacuum-sealed container or to coat it in something that blocks air from touching it.

I think I am good on mining stocks. I tend to believe more in the total collapse of the leveraged dollar system and think that nations will nationalize their resources and hold out for better deals on the global market. I won't sell the mining shares I have, but I also am not too keen to buy more. If GME short squeeze kicks off and things stay together well enough then I will be fine. But I think it is prudent to be in GME and physical PMs for 80% of your portfolio. But that's just me.

I experimented with "Iron Out" brand rust stain remover to clean an ugly debased 12g silver tetradrachm of Gordian III from Antioch I bought for $40 years ago and regretted ever since because it was fugly and wouldn't respond to the baking soda and aluminum foil trick or mechanical cleaning because the rust and copper salt crusts were too tenacious. I dissolved 40g of the iron out (sodium hydrosulfite and sodium metabisulfite) in 16oz of water and soaked the ugly bastard, removing it periodically to inspect and brush off in water, and after a few hours the rust and metal salts were mostly dissolved making it very easy to remove the few remaining spots of encrusted dirt, which took about 20 minutes under 20x magnification. Here he is now, after cleaning it with the tools and giving it another quick bath in the Iron Out solution for good measure. It ain't perfect but I'm satisfied, it doesn't seem like Iron Out really harms silver much if at all so I wanted to share with frens who might have similar problem coins. I did soak some copper cents and it brightened them at first but after an hour when I checked back they were kinda etched and frosty so it appears to attack copper. Gotta do more experimenting but I think this product will be really helpful.

Thanks fren, I definitely agree. Besides being a fun and rewarding hobby knowing how to clean coins and artifacts without ruining them is a useful skill. I'm not rich so being able to recognize a cheapie "diamond in the rough" that can be restored and turned into something worth multiples of the purchase price is a great way to collect nice things without straining one's budget. Here's one of my favorite examples, I got this crusty 8.3g Corinthian Pegasus stater for $110 shipped knowing there was a nice coin under the crud.

The cheapest silver I can get, but if the choice is between bullion and constitutional coin and the prices are comparable I prefer old coinage, especially if you can cherry pick nice mercs and walking liberty halves from the bin instead of getting scammed with traitorous Roosevelt dimes and worn down Washington quarters.
