The problem with psychology is that definitions and terminology change quite often, the DSM for example has had five editions full of reclassifications since it was first published and a new one is scheduled for this year. So the people who once were considered to be high-functioning autists have different mental illnesses now and autism is reserved for people with somewhat severe developmental issues. A person with let's say aspergers can nowadays dodge a diagnosis for autism if they don't show considerable delays in development but on the other hand the two can also overlap.
