Unless you're handsome and stick out from the rest of the guys, I doubt girls would approach (or at least often). That doesn't mean that they find you repulsive. I don't know what it means, it's just what I observed in my high school. It's not fair, is what I've noticed, because many of the perfectly average looking guys (and you know what my average is) ended up having the impression that they must be hideous so they never tried anymore. With all this equality only a few girls ever do the asking out.
I guess you might have been right, the media made them pickier than they ever were. I don't think you should meet them via social media. Everybody has far better chances in person. I believe in you too.
