Mass immigration is a desperate bid to stave off paradigm shift away from infinite growth for one more generation and allow those in power some breathing room to set themselves up for it. Depopulation is going to break everything, the world has not experienced it in 1000 years since the black death and society and people today are far more fragile and interconnected than people were back then, when most lived on farms. The massive cities of today may as well be colonies on the moon when it comes to self sufficiency, without modern oil based farming, transport, and building climate control the people will starve and the buildings will literally rot. To say nothing of the further brittleness that has been added with computer based just in time logistics. The entire system has been bled of resiliency in the name of greater profit and control to those who own it. A massive percentage of the US population moving away from areas with reasonable growing climate and water supplies into areas that were thinly or basically uninhabited for all of humanity's existence and totally reliant on all the above listed modern systems will turn out to be a mistake of historical proportions.
