A doomsday bestseller, it was translated into six different languages at the time, and of course makes no mention of biblical names, places etc. These were added later, and a thousand years of squabbling broke out with Revelations yo yoing in and out of apocrypha. Then The Church just figured nobody was alive to contradict them any more, so they bolted it onto the NT for good. Problem with that is they didn't destroy any of the older texts.
In many respects this is a good thing. God not turning psycho at The End is a lot more reassuring that He might indeed have a Plan after all. One that might not involve a ragequit toho voho is so unbecomming of a Creator God.
