The academics say that a gnostic author called Cerinthus wrote the gospel of john specifically due it it being somewhat different to the others, so long story short all of the new testament apocrypha, and you could argue some Islamic apocrypha, come directly from gnostic philosophy. The Church Fathers were the ones who subverted it all after they denied Valentinus a position in the early church, that's when Irenaeus 'refuted' all of the texts and then they all got recompiled into the modern four gospels.
