I have only lived in Moscow, but I can give you some advice.

1- Before you go you better speak russian or go with someone that speaks it, if not you are fucked.

2- Dont change money in the airport or in Spain, change it in russia (you will get more).

3- Taxist are pices of shit, if they notice you are a foreigner they will try to scam you, watch out.

4- Watch out for restaurants some of them (atleast in Moscow) will try to scam you.

And thats pretty much all, if I think about something else I will tell you.

Well, I don't speak a single word of Russian as courses will be taught in English, so I might be a bit fucked. How possible is it to learn some basic Russian in about a month a half?

How? You're supposed to know what you order and how much it costs beforehand, can a restaurant get away that easily with trying to scam you?

Russian its a complex language, but yeah you can learn some basic thing before going. If i where you i would learn the russian alphabet and how to read russian (this is the most basic thing) and then i would make a list with userfull words and phrases (like: вы знaeтe гдe... ?)

Well, i'm not russian, but i do know their language.
Could you give you some tips on basic etiquette and how to talk with russians. Please dont try to adress russians by their nationality, example: dont try reaching foreigner by calling them "russkiy" Simply because you can be mistaken, there lots of ethnicities living in russia
Also i dont recommend you to use the word "tovarisch" or comrade. Its obsolete and not everyone thinks good of soviet times.
And third, if you after all that, need to talk to a stranger, i recommend you to adress them by their gender. If its a man, use "muztschina" and if its a female then use "dzchenzschina"
Sorry for the transcription, could have written that more correct in cyrrilic, but you wouldnt understand

I'd say I'm quite good with languages so I hope I will catch up quickly enough. At least the bare minimum to be able to survive.

I have no clue. I literally don't know anything because the university is taking fucking forever to do their thing. I don't even have the invitation for the visa yet and it's been three weeks since they told me I was accepted for the exchange.

The university offered me a shared room, but I'm too much of an autist to live one meter away from some random guy and I'd prefer renting a flat since they are really cheap for what I've seen.
But I can't resort to Russian webs since I don't speak the language and all google results in English are for vacation rental.

Also always use вы when talking to someone that you dont know or you barely know, dont use ты unless you know the person.

Also use здpaвcтвyйтe, dont use пpивeт unless you know the person.

Sadly regarding to the accomodation thing, i cant help, when i went to moscow i stayed in an hotel and then in some russian friends homes.

Not sure if this applies to Russian gopniks but we have those here too and are easily avoided as long as you don't get into some ghetto. Ours tend to not cause too much trouble anyway.

Speaking of which, which places should I avoid? Specially for living. Other than those places is Kazan a nice city to live in?

There are not so many places to avoid actually, but usually if area starts to look more like rural, better is not to go there

Within city limits, I'd say "Zhilploshchadka"
Жилплoщaдкa is a place to avoid,

Yudino, Boriskovo these two are scary at evening, but I doubt, that you'll ever go there

based on my personal observations, most of the violent crime in Kazan comitted because of alcohol

plus they are relatively cheap

Public transport is also quite cheap but bus drivers tend to ignore their schedule

I will start mid-August. I don't really have any warm clothing since I like cold and winter here is mild enough to pass it with just a sweatshirt. In any case there's no point in carrying a bag full of warm clothes in August so I'll buy them once I get there.
