First of all, for people with certain genes, SSRIs can make you go from depressed to actively suicidal, its not pretty, and because of the long halflife it doesnt just go away if you stop the drugs.
Secondly, there is a serious risk of permanent brain and nerve damage after prolonged use of SSRIs
There are other risks too, less serious
Erectile dysfunction, delayed ejaculation, loss of sexual pleasure, loss of appetite, muscle weakness, brain fog, are some of the most common. Many other issues can occur to.
I've dealt with catatonic depression myself. It sucks. Its not easy to overcome.
Before trying any drugs, try these things:
switch to a diet of fresh food prepared at home, making sure to get enough calories every single day. Many depressed people fail to eat enough food, and when they do eat they consume easy empty carbs. Take a multivitamin. Dont worry about shit like keto, paleo, vegan, etc that stuff wont make you feel better, the only thing that matters is eat fresh food and eat enough food
Exercise. Every day. Get your heart rate above 160 for a minimum of 10 minutes straight. Every day. Lift weights. Take it slow and focus on consistency.
Sleep adequately but dont oversleep. Every day. Adequate is different for different people. I need 9 hours. Some people only need 5. Some people recovering from physical trauma might need 12.
Try supplements like DHEA and Zinc. For me this combo boosts my testosterone which makes me feel more energetic, stronger, and more confident. Most men have low T levels today. I personally recommend shooting for levels over 1k if you are young. It is easy to get there with DHEA and the last recommendations I just made
See a male psychologist that specializes in depression. NOT A THERAPIST, NOT A PSYCHIATRIST, NOT A FEMALE. I highly recommend CBT style treatment. Depression is very much like an addiction so i also recommend learning about addiction and translating it to help your depression
