He decided not to be a burden on his family and children, and exited the world on his own terms. Say what you will about suicide, but there are times when it spares people pain. It was like tearing off a bandage for his family. They hurt a lot at first, but they can move on with their lives now, with only fond memories of their father. They didn't have to watch his slow decline, or watch as he forgot their names, who they were, and then forget who he is himself.
There are legitimate circumstances for suicide. Not many, but they exist.
