Judah was unfaiithful, which led to Babylon conquering it. They then broke the law again when returning by letting Edomites into their midsts, and mixed and mingled with another, something clearly banned in the law

As a nation has the Jews it deserves, so too Judah could only be overtaken by Edom through their own unfaithfulness and thus lost their covenant as a result.
