It may be true for the US because you never had to change your currency, so there wasn't a big melting down policy, but i'm not too sure this is true elsewhere.
Here in the EU it's been nearly 25 years we are using the €, and what i got from literature on the matter from the BdF (not too sure for others EU countries, but it must be in that range), the return rate for silver french francs were around 90-92%.
8% still surviving out from hundreds of millions francs existing still is a number, but not a big one.

all of those things happened.
In 1890 we mined so much silver that the US dollar fell in value below a quarter.
Since then we've mined so little silver that if we used it for money, a Morgan Dollar would be worth more than a new lamborghini.

these things aren't contradictory, they are both true. We had far too much silver to use as money in 1890, and nowhere near enough now.

You guys melted more than we did, but from what I've read about 60% of US junk silver got melted in the 60's-70's. And the feds did have a policy of melting old coins, in particular the Morgan and Peace dollars were both mostly melted. But there were so damn many of them sitting in bank vaults that even with most of them melted they're still common as heck.

but you're right. We have far more than 8% of our old silver surviving. Even the older valuable stuff is actually quite common.

true they've never been mined at that ratio
false that it's a monetary balance

in the US at least. Gold dropped against silver during the California gold rush, and then silver dropped vs. gold during Comstock, Leadville, and Aspen.

we never hit a good 15:1 and stayed there, which is one reason both monometalists and bimetalists were so freakin frustrated.

This discussion we have brings me countless flashbacks back when i was a 10yo kid during our "great leap forward" with the euro.
With my current reading grid, the level of propaganda was sickening. All day on the talmudvision we were spammed with (((experts))) explaining us how the € would bring an unprecedented era of prosperity, the rebirth of Evropa, how we needed to ditch all our obsolete silber francs/marks/drachmai/escudos/.. because they were outdated crap from the past. How the € would not only outshine the USD (lul) but also make us the reserve currency for international trades, how a strong € would make inflation a bad dream from the annales of history etc...

End result : all EU nations on the verge of total collapse, engulfed in extreme levels of debt, a constantly devaluating currency, no industries left, access to property divided by 3 for ppl below 40yo, perma-doom.
What a fucking scam.

The ratio fluctuates but stays very close to 15:1. That's why you introduce a bimetallic standard with a floating peg in a range, you use an undenominated gold coin like the sovereign or eagle. The threat of adjustment would keep speculators at bay but it's there if the Treasury needs to use it.

I think back in the day we had this idea that fiat had produced great wealth, and it had. But there's a sweet spot where it works well, and we're long past that sweet spot now.
It really didn't last long, but it's a big part of the reason US boomers at least did so well and had it so easy. People just don't understand that what worked 50 years ago might be catastrophic now. But they'll learn. They're learning.

To add something to this, pic rel are 2 coins from my collection from former French Indochina (now Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam) currency during the LMU standard.
For colonies you had the composition (silver), the purity (0.900) and the weight (27g) marked on the coins so the locals would trust western currencies and trade with them. It also was true with other colonial powers such as the US, Spain, etc..
Also any depreciation/diluting was very clear thanks to this system : on the left coin from 1894 you can see the weight of 1 Piastre = 27.215g, and on the right (1904) = 27g.
So 0.21g in a decade (less than 1%).

I wish we'd have this level of depreciation today, instead of losing 10%/year kek (salty kek).

I think we probably had a situation where countries were padding their metal supply with paper notes also. I don't know that, but it would make sense. No need to back every single gold or silver note unless there's a national bank run, and those were rare. The temptation to print unbacked money is just too large to ignore.

From what I understand silver has been shipped to China and India while somehow China was the one suppressing the prices using the US bond market. When silver is out it won't just be a few dollars it will simply explode. One price to the next. And gold will also rise but silver will be so high I can't even put a number on it. Are precious metals just a means of wealth transfer for countries?

the price of silver didn't change. It might even have gone down. The value of the dollar changed. The stuff was no cheaper at $3 than it is at $30. It cost the same.

Ive looked at the housing taxes and there are certain people who qualify for not having to pay extra, some of it was to deter people from having multiple homes, on one hand this helps prvent the jew from slurping with cash but also limits the amount of houses you can give to your offspring.
I look at the silver prices based on average wages too, price hasnt changed much in that respect, but the silver definitely outpaced inflation in that timeframe.

I could never appreciate money / wealth when I was a kid. Any little bits of money I got, I'd spend it immediately on candy, soda, and toys.

I do have these fond memories, though, of walking to the gas station convenience store that was only a few blocks away. Buying a huge 44oz fountain drink of DR SLICE (which seemed absolutely humongous in my small child hands) and then later that day having diarrhea from it. Ah, those were the days!

True, me and my wife can walk away with half a million dollars tax free if we sell our house. Regarding giving houses to offspring, you just do it when you're alive and the taxes are negligible. Even if they inherit, their tax basis starts from when you die, not from when you bought, so they could wind up getting a lot of houses for not much taxes.

But for those that don't have houses, and won't inherit houses, those guys are screwed.
Yeah, silver has beaten inflation X2 in my lifetime. Gold has beaten inflation X10 currently. Either one is a decent hedge.

They used to teach this stuff in the US. Back in the 70's. We learned over and over that if our money was sitting in savings at a rate lower than inflation, we were losing money. We were taught if we can get credit at 2% and put it into an asset that gains 8% we were making free money. Not that you could get credit at 2% in the 70's, but we were taught it anyways.

I don't know anything about that, but I do know in 1890 the average wage in the US was a buck a day except for silver miners.
Part of the reason silver mining collapsed in the 1890's is because miners earned $3 per day. With the silver crash this wasn't affordable. The owners tried to bring in scabs that would work for a buck a day and wars broke out. Hundreds died, most of them buried in an unmarked shallow grave in the woods. By the time the wars were over the mines were destroyed, and most of them never produced an ounce of silver again.

A fantasy piece is one that is either completely made up, or a copy of a real coin that's produced from new dies without the intent to deceive

copies and reproductions are any counterfeit that's marked as a copy so people aren't fooled.

And at the current pace we will also set a record for the rainiest spring too. All the water tables are so full the ground can't absorb any more of it, so we have giant puddles everywhere in the woods, it's a pain in the ass to enjoy a walk. And i already fear the incoming invasion of mosquitos this summer since females can lay eggs everywhere.

If it's been the same for you, you should take a look at your local meteorological data too. Could be interesting.

not really, it just gets really busy because all that water has to be treated to EPA standards before it leaves the mine site. So no days off, 12 hour work days. Usually if there's accidents or injuries it's during runnoff when we get busy.

I've seen a few crazy things over the years, but I can't legally talk about them. Just near-catastrophes.
