Common Core actually isn't that bad. It has its drawbacks, but common core resolves one thing that desperately needed fixing in US education: frequent movers.
Let's say you have two school districts, one in Ohio and one in Indiana. Ohio teaches the order of operations in 7th grade, but Indiana teaches it in 6th.
Now, little Timmy here goes to the Ohio school and he's in 6th grade.
But wait! His parents are moving to Indiana in the summer! This means that Timmy will NOT learn the order of operations in class and will be significant behind his peers because of the differences in state curriculum.
Common Core levels this playing field and says that order of operations should be taught in 6th grade. Now if little Timmy moves from Ohio to Indiana, it doesn't matter because he'll have learned the order of operations anyway.
