Depends on how much you pay for it. Imho if the premium is higher than the cheapest .999 coins you can find (brits, leafs, arks,..) then it's not worth it and you wil always be better picking up the .999.
Also be careful of the merchant trick newfrens like yourself might not be aware of : the LCS make you pay at face value, but buy back at weight. And it's for a simple jewish trick : old junk coins have wear, thus never weight as much as when they were minted, and it can easily go as far as 10% of the coin content missing!
Let say your $100 FV = 1KG normally, in truth you'll end up with 900gr of silver, and the LCS will purchase back for 900gr, not 1KG.

Personally if i were you i'd go for maple leafs if you want an easy pick, they are pretty much impossible to counterfeit, .9999, legal tender, are widely renowned and often are the cheapest option in the US but tend to appreciate over time.

The past few months I was deal hunting on eBay, especially in April. I got some junk very close to spot at the time because sellers didn't update their prices and I cleaned up quite well. Typically smaller sellers that don't specialize in PMs. Dedicated PM resellers will always have a premium on junk, especially American. Go for weight now and once you have a few hundred toz then dabble in junk for fractionals. Personally I like Golden Eagle Coin for their Merc dimes. I used the BTC I get back on my credit card to buy there.

Otherwise take time to make your shopping, premiums can vary pretty widely between online sellers (sometimes you are better of waiting for "at spot" special offers, etc...).

He better start with reputed sellers to build confidence and get accustomed to the real stuff for a while before dipping a toe in the wild west. I came across the most bizarre stuff being faked on ebay, even low silver content dime sized foreign coins with no key dates kek. And i believe the sellers aren't even aware of it most of the time when it's only 1 or 2 coins in a lot.

You're right for saying that I'd rather hold bullion with SOVL, but there are other reasons too: 20 Francs and Sovs are cheaper than most 1 oz coins here; also it's easier to evade taxes on capital gain for smaller denomination gold, as you can get paid in cash.

That being said, I'd love to add some ancient bullion to my stack, but I'll stick to coins that have very minor numismatic; that'll make things easier in case someone has to sell them. I've seen many greek, roman and byzantine silver sold fairly close to spot value, so I'll probably get some of these. As for gold, I'll probably aim for something slabbed: really not a fan of that, but again, it'll make thing easier in case I have to sell it.

And since you also like fossils, have some I bought as a child.

I might be misunderstanding you, but ancient bullion (like irregular poured silver bars) are difficult to authenticate and easily faked, but you can get little Medieval era "Viking" silver bars and cut hacksilver fragments relatively cheap in the context of ancient precious metals, they're still quite a bit more expensive than modern bullion though. Regarding Greek, Roman and Byzantine silver coins, I've never seen even the crappiest condition *genuine* ancient silver coins sell for close to spot price, but there are many modern fakes that are offered at a very low price so I fear that what you saw were probably forgeries. The one type of genuine ancient precious metal coin that can have a relatively low premium are common issues of various 6th-9th century Byzantine gold pieces, so you might want to investigate those. And thanks for sharing your fossils anon, I always enjoyed those bullet shaped belemnites.

Its the opposite and every audit will reveal that there is half of what they thought they had until its realized that they own an infitesmal amount that can fit easily fit in a duffel bag. I have zero trust in their audits when they claim they have gold. The chinese have invested more in pulp production for currency printing than they have in precious metal markets; and i say metal markets because my gut instinct [always right] is telling me that the yellow bugs are not actually transporting any gold into their vaults. I can see it now, they own stacks of what looks like newspapers, piled to the ceiling, and each page is written in gookspeak, claiming its a promise for a swiss bar of true-gold [tm].

Ancient and medieval jewelry often functioned like bullion money, silver bracelet/arm rings can be pretty cheap. I don't have much but my favorite is the triangular geometric chip-carved gilded silver head of a hair pin, probably broken like hacksilver and used as money. I think it's an early Germanic migration era piece, maybe 5th-6th century AD. At 7.4 grams it isn't much by modern standards, but in AD 580 it could have paid for 2 to 5 days of labor, depending on the skill of the person and the particular task. I'd like to get it restored with a new pin someday.

It is a concept I'm quite fond of too! A while ago a metal detectorist from Russia was selling bulk lots of the smol silver kopecks, most looked like they came from a.single hoard. They were really cheap so i bought like 50 of 'em. Back when I was 7 years old I read about them in an Eyewitness children's picture book about the evolution of money (super based book kek) and vowed to someday get some of them because they're cool as hell.

Indeed, as Scrapfren said, you can sometimes find bizantine gold solidi for less than x1.5/2 spot if you are interested. Those aren't the prettiest but some with angels have nice designs.
For ancient silver or electrum that's another story, you better not purchase it for the metal content.
But since you are italian, maybe you could find great deals if you join detectorist groups online or IRL?

Be careful tho, you risk to get hooked pretty fast, for me it only took few coins to become obsessed. Knowing you are holding items who were used 2,000+ years ago by your ancestors really is something fantastic.
If you need any advise don't hesitate to ask after Scrapfren's tips. First thing he told me was to stop being a cheapsteak and rather get less but more enjoyable items.

I didn't listen and got myself some cheap crappy stuff all worn down, but then when i started getting higher quality/more detailled coins, and it's truly where you want to be. I ended up ditching the crappy stuff for the price i paid them for eventually so that's not a big deal, but it would have saved me time to listen. But i suppose it's the common mistake most newbies make.
Not high end UNC coinage either, you have to find the middle ground between affordability and nice details. A bit of wear makes the item feel more "historic" and less risky to fondle too.

It's been pretty quiet the past few days fren. Not that many interesting lots listed, so the few ones i added to gixen went far above my asking price.
I did got myself a bad deal tho lol!

With the suspension mounts probably right around 3ozt, that's a savvy slurp! I've never tried offering less than the opening bid on anything listed as an auction with a best offer option, but i can see the strategy being worthwhile if the auctions have been listed for days and haven't gotten any activity, congrats and thanks for sharing your success fren I'll keep that in mind. My auctions end between 2-4 days from now so a lot could change, but they're still quiet and sleepy so I'm optimistic.

I live in a large town, and my neighborhood has the smaller houses for certain compared to elsewhere, along side big town property taxes. Still though it's 1/4 of my take home and a nice place to live. When I was in early college, a high school friend was into it and was pissed that I didn't want to be seen with him in public when he wore a shirt that featured anything containing, that, on it lol. Yes I reached the same conclusion; we'll see. When I finally decided to jump into PM I didn't work for a couple of weeks and went full autistic in order to grasp how things works, what and where to buy and how to test it properly at home. But ancient coins or numismatics in general is a whole different area of expertise I'm too lazy and busy to get into, which is why I'm so hesitant on buying anything whose value goes beyond metal value.

I myself am one, but I hunt mainly on the beach, cos laws are very strict regarding antiquities and I'm such a pussy. Some of the jewelry from my stack was found there, but overall I yet have to find anything older than a century. Also I hunt like 20 days per year, so my chances of finding something actually old are even lower. But I still hope to find something ancient one day.

As for most of Europe, it easy to dig a hole in the ground or do some snorkeling and finding something historical like pic related pottery. It's not uncommon for families to treasure these findings, even though it's technically illegal. My dad was such a madlad; we actually hold pieces of pottery and statues that belong in a museum.

Bob, what's that upper left rock? Are those fish/shark teeth or dental plates from a jumbled up individual? Dunno if you've come across Listracanthus proto shark denticles, they're cool feathery fin-shaped things shed individually and found somewhat frequently in black shale overlaying coal in Illinois and Kansas IIRC, but in that shale I once found a disaggregated pile of hundreds or more small denticles plus apparent bony structures (hopefully jaws!), from a small/juvenile Listracanthus carcass. It doesn't look too intelligible to me but I have a hunch it would be of great interest to an autistic specialist. A museum quality Agassizodus jaw full of teeth was once found in a ~12" long ironstone concretion from that coal/shale interface by the local paleontologist, and it was his most prized discovery of his 45 year career. Those concretions are quite rare but when found often hold magnificent fossils. Guess who found where a literal wagonload of dozens of concretions up to nearly 2' long, waste culled from a nearby 19th century coal mine, was dumped right on the bank of a creek while he was out scouting for bottle dumps... I didn't get around to it last summer but I'll be spending a few days checking it out and digging up the submerged concretions this summer, hopefully some of them have been split naturally after 140 years of freeze/thaw cycles and I can cherrypick some easy gems. Vertebrate fossils that old are top shelf stuff.

Ok so the fish at top left is a bit of a mystery. It's Douglass Pass Oil Shale, I believe it's a Green River Formation or analog. Near-shore Lake Uintah sediments maybe? My memory fails me. Probably a gar, likely Atractosteus simplex.
I interpreted the delicate radiating structures as either fins or maybe a ruggose operculum. But your guess is as good as mine, I'm no ichthyologist. I just know it's a fish, and it's a freshwater lake fish. My area of expertise is strictly dinosaurs. Other stuff I usually have to ask an expert.

You may have millions of dollars in that concretion pile! You have to post what you find, I would love to see some good concretion fossils! Can you get a truck to the site? I'd want to drag the entire pile home to search at leisure.

Here's a closer shot of the thing. I believe the denticles are scales. This fragment I believe contains skull elements. The jaws were sadly missing. I have a box with another few pounds of this fish in it, but the thing was scattered and broken so not much value as a specimen. Just an interesting find that I have sitting on a shelf.

I would love to find a good toothed fish skull or even a jaw. I suppose if I go looking I could probably find the jaws off this guy, since I know exactly where the rest of the fish was located.

The clerk I spoke with said his brother is a grader. I can’t remember which company.
It sounded like the brother ran the shop, but there was a middle aged man, didn’t seem old enough to be a boomer, being the counter.
I can’t imagine the brother is much older than the guy I spoke with

I just was going by what APMEX recommended me when buying silver. And I've seen on videos of handling of silver with cotton gloves. Maybe the nitrile reacts, I dunno.

Ah ok, I had Pennsylvanian era fauna on the brain but I shoulda figured it was associated with the Green River fish next to it. In the closer shot the things in question definitely look like scales, not weird crusher teeth or dental plates, and is the larger bumpy scute-lookin' thing which I didn't notice before maybe the interior of part of a skull? Hell yeah bro, imagine discovering a super rare terrestrial vertebrate, or some well preserved sharks in those unusually long and narrow concretions. They wouldn't have formed like that if there wasn't an interesting nucleus hiding inside. No convenient vehicle access, it's over a half mile hike and slog to get there but if anything awesome shows up in a pre-cracked concretion I'll easily find the motivation to pack them all out 1 or 2 at a time. In 19th c. publications they mention those same concretions, that they're infrequent annoyances to the coal miners drifting into seams there and they made specific note of how they often reveal superb fossils when cracked open. There were 20-30 huge concretions exposed on the bank above the water in that spot, surely many others buried underneath. No idea how many miner man-hours it took to find all those but I'm quite certain that I'll never see another opportunity like it again, gotta be at least 1 treasure in there. I'll definitely update you either way, hopefully around 2 months from now.

so my ex brother in law took his family to a quarry up your way. He pays $25 per person to go dig some fossils. He finds an incredible toothy fish in a concretion. So the quarry takes the fossil and offers to sell it to him for $12k. He couldn't afford it.
Horseshit like that makes me think you might have a gold mine there. As you say, those concretions didn't form for no reason! There's something in them, and it might very well be worth a fortune.

Dammit that sucks, absolutely intolerable. Was it at one of the Green River formation quarries? I've read that they steal all the good stuff like rays, birds, frogs etc. and only let you keep the common crap. I'd love to split some rocks there but knowing they screw you like that has killed most of my interest, it's a real shame. Thanks for the support/motivation regarding the concretions, I found the spot 15 years ago but didn't really think about it again until brainstorming for worthwhile hunting prospects last year. You know what photographic memories are like, it was a long time ago but still crystal clear, there's no doubt about what I stumbled upon or what a unique opportunity it is.

Darn, I can't argue but it weighs nearly a kilo and is completely solid stone, not porous like the east coast Eocene/Miocene whale verts I've seen. Could've come from anywhere though, when I switched gears and was looking for other fossils the stuff I saw didn't look like anything remotely local, some maybe not even from the US.

It's unremarkable for an 18th century Japanese blade so probably not, but 10+ years ago i honed the edge until it was razor sharp and it would cut clean through living trees up to 4" in diameter with 1 powerful diagonal slice, with plenty of force to spare upon exit. The memes and legends are true anon they're fearsome weapons, nothing else I've played with holds a candle to them.

Literally couldn't remember what a hundred euro note looked like until i looked at this schizo pic, We've had this cough cough "currency" since 2002 and in around 2004 they removed the 100, 200 and 500 note from circulation here and for about the last 20 years all we've had to use is the 5, 10, 20 and 50 notes.
