Fun fact that'll save you some $, mechanical hard drives have powerful magnets in them that will serve nicely if you have a dead drive and are in need of a magnet for testing.

His perpetual peevishness, mean-spiritedness, malignant narcissism, self-righteous faggotry, unsolicited criticality, incurable ignorance and cruel condescension are a few. His remarkable close-mindedness, lack of wisdom and perceptiveness, nonexistent imagination and sense of humor are more.

The glaring double-standards he adheres to are enough alone to justify our disdain. Went to a unique type of store today, won't get into the details but they had a scale and a pair of calipers on the counter since they accept silver for transactions. Was thinking about spending my walking around krug to buy some groceries, good to know that another place nearby is accepting real money. I think hes been doing this for a a while. The owner is older than time, likely from before gold and silver were even money kek just kidding. I think it is fairly easy to DIY cast silver. Silver's melting point is just under 1,800 degrees fahrenheit and a propane blowtorch can become as hot as 3,000 degrees, according to Wikipedia. You will want a furnace if you intend to do this at scale and often. Silver working is so old and well documented that you can likely Google most questions you may have.

You don't need much equipment to simply melt and pour metals, but refining anything to industry purity standards will require a lot more gear, dedicated space and ventilation and a good grasp of the chemistry and technical aspects involved. You can get a little electric hobby furnace for the price of ~10oz of silver (I got one 5 years ago) and with a few crucibles, molds and some flux you'll be ready to get your feet wet and have some fun.

I've played with it a little but still haven't gotten around to making my silver knuckleduster bullion using these very nice and shapely antique iron ones as the template. I've calculated that it will take approximately 7ozt of silver to cast each one, but I can bring it up to 10 by adding 4 tooth-like blades to each knuckle and fattening whatever you call the part that is braced against the palm. Dunno how we'd get it though customs safely though, might need to entomb it within a flat bar/slab of pewter and have you melt it off on the stove lol

All these casting silver talks remind me of this supposed antique gallic ingot i purchased last year.
Honestly i seriously doubt it is ancient, and i don't even know how one could confirm or deny such claim, so by default i assume it is not. But at least it is silver, of that i am sure of. Even back then my max bid what at spot so worst case scenario i ended up with ugly molten 5ozer purchased at spot. Turn out i got it for cheaper than that.

But legit or not, this lil' mofo grew on me, especially because it fit well in hand and give an incredible ping when you flip it/ping it, and i always wondered how it was made. Looks very "handmade-y"

Maybe an artifact of an irregular cooled edge formed while pouring, then as more molten metal was added it flowed around to the the far(bottom) side leaving the strange crevice? Definitely does look like something poured in moist dirt or the like, maybe some of it is still stuck in the crack?

My token today came from the same spot I've dug those tokens before. It seems someone in 1904 tossed a handful of tokens into a fireplace and now I'm finding them.

Why the specific date, did the structure burn down then and you're finding them in the ruins around where the fireplace was? Or are you finding them in a nearby place where they dumped their fire/stove ashes? For brass to get eaten up like that it must've gotten really blasted in the fire, once I came across the dump of a 1940-50s city rubbish incinerator where everything was burned/melted and broken down small, only a few things around 1"x1" or larger. While looking at all the melted/deformed glass shards and metal lightbulb bases I spotted a wheat penny. Then I started looking specifically for coins and eyeballed another 7 or 8 pennies on the surface in short order. Some were nasty with encrusted slag but none were melted or missing chunks like yours. I never went back to specifically search for coins/jewelry but considering all that I found on the surface so quickly I bet it's loaded, would be a fun hunt. Have you ever seen anything like that?

yes, I'm finding them in the midden where they dumped stove ashes. I'm not finding brick or stone at this location so I assume it's a cast iron stove. Not a lot of coal there, so probably a wood fire.

The midden is huge. Close to an acre. Lots of artifacts but very few bottles, mugs and shot glasses. So probably not a saloon itself. The structure was big. Probably three stories, maybe 1500 sq ft footprint with outhouses and sheds nearby.

My best guess is cigar store because of stuff I've found there. It was a big place. Very interesting to the metal detector type dude. Picrelate sign I found there along with a cigar store token worth a small fortune.

And that run of tokens is truly spectacular, I've never seen such a cool variety of shapes from one business and don't recall ever seeing a triangular token of any kind before. I had a quick look on Numista and was surprised to see these silver coins they say were circulating commemoratives. If it's true that they were actually used in commerce in the late 1980s it's a remarkably late/young outlier for silver being used officially as money. The latest instance I know of are the bimetallic Mexican .925 silver center 10, 20 and 50 pesos from 1992-1995. What is your understanding of the relatively young Polish silver coins made from the 60s-80s, which ones actually circulated?

I definitely agree, as does another French anon who's a very helpful regular here, did you see the great deal on a bunch of silver 5F semeuse coins he shared here recently? Only around €22 per Troy ounce of actual silver content, so the batch was hundreds of euros below spot price. He's a good friend to have and it might benefit you both to connect and share ideas.

(which is normally hard to achieve in hyperinflation times when people try to spend money asap)

Only some of these coins are viable for stacking. Pope coins and Piłsudski coin always have premium, even in awful condition. But that's simply because these people are idolized by many.

These 3 coins from pic are only 20th century polish junk silver worth stacking. Most boomer stacks consist 99% of the first coin (30th anniversary of communism in poland) because it was made in crazy amount and has no collector value.

I believe the coins I'm missing have only one or maybe two known examples, so I'll probably never acquire them.

the tokens in my picture above are far more common, with populations left to right of 55+, ~20, 7, and 4.

the token pictured with this post is unique, population of 1 I believe. Not in great shape though.

I feel this too.
I understand the nature of convenience of weight of wealth transfer.
I was once thinking of a way to allow for a fast, international silver transfer system.
The best way I personally thought of doing it would be like:

Person A buys goods from Person B online for an amount of silver.
Person A recieves a pre-trade receipt (sheet with banking details on it) that he takes with his silver to the bank, allowing the banks to register the trade as legit.
Once the receipt is scanned in, Person B can automatically redeem pre-stocked silver at his local silver bank the moment the transfer is confirmed.
The silver that Person A handed to his local bank is then shipped across the world to the country of Person B, replenishing the temporarily imbalanced stock.

Are there any major problems with this method of transfer? Or am I being a retard?
The only real problem that I can see is that a huge number of people could attempt to redeem silver at the same local branch, leading to people having to wait a bit for it to restock.
Then I think that there could be a system where the banks keep inventory, and upload their stock to a database that can assign people to collect from branches with more silver stock, whilst waiting for another to restock.

There's a trade-off involving amount and distance where it starts paying off to convert stable stores of value into more portable (and perhaps more volatile) forms and then move those around instead and then convert back at the destination. People have been doing this for thousands of years, see Hawala. I stopped collecting because prices of Polish coins and banknotes skyrocketed during covid. It's simply not fun anymore. I rarely was able to add anything to my collection. And now suddenly I needed to bid against speculative investors who didn't even knew what they bought. And I hate grading. Grading is cancer to that hobby. It's so tiresome.

If I ever go back to collecting, I will probably not touch anything from 20th and 21st century. 16th century looks fun.

I doubt anyone would have any incentive to transport that ugly crap over the ocean. They have all the same year and no variations. Even if there are some collectors of commie Poland coinage, they only need one coin like that as a specimen, not the entire bag.

Plus it's more practical to verify the authenticity when you can closely scrutinize the coin and hold it in your hands.

So you're trying to build a full set of silver rupees and fractions, like 1 from each year? Or are you just stacking all the cheap ones you find like one would hoard constitutional/junk silver? If you have any coin shops in proximity I recommend visiting or calling and asking about cheap "scrap bin" foreign silver they might be accumulating and sending to a refinery periodically. The best LCS in my hometown has 2 different scrap silver buckets/bins they will sell items from at precisely melt value; one with worn/damaged US and any foreign silver that isn't worth their time to sell individually, and a bin for old silverware and jewelry. I live 1000 miles away but my dad goes and harvests fresh goodies a few times a week, and over time he has rescued a good pile of those British India silvers since no one else locally really wants them.

Not too sure, i think i paid 13 bux for it.
But i've an interesting story related to this token! I needed some cash so i put it back on sale on ebay for 90/100€ (you can try any figure really, it's not like another token like this will pop up anytime soon).
2 weeks later there is this german dude contacting me on ebay, new account, asking me if i could delist the token immediately and asked to buy it from me.
I asked him why he don't simply put the token in his cart. And he told me he didn't want to leave a purchase trail. He asked for my IBAN number. I thought it was a bit curious because if i wasn't a honest dude i'd simply pocket the money and he'd have zero recourse or way to complain toward ebay. Luckily for him i'm white.

And it was fine by me, since i'd save the ebay transaction fees, who are pretty stiff. So i gave him my account n°, delisted the token, and the tomorrow morning the cash was credited. He then sent me his address via a throwaway mail account.

First time i dealt with a paranoid mason. Was feeling like i was in the 9th Gate movie kek.

Me too, when I first started seeing encapsulated coins get more popular when I was a kid i found the whole concept revolting and entirely contrary to the spirit of collecting, and also incompatible with my hands-on approach to enjoying the hobby. I've never owned a single slabbed coin and have no interest in changing that, plus raw coins are usually cheaper anyway.

I hate graded slabbed coins, the best analogy I can come up with is it would be like volunteering to wear a condom every time you have sex with your perfectly clean and faithful woman. Not my style, lol. My preference aside, it is also true that collectors of ancients are probably the least tolerant of slabs of anyone under the broad numismatic umbrella. They appreciate authenticated coins of course but "graded" ancients are a joke. There are so many more variables at play with coins that are all hand-struck with hand-carved dies with varying force and varying orientation on planchets that are all different, coins that were then buried in all sorts of conditions with a wide spectrum of influences on the patina and surfaces and the structure of the metal itself. There are lots of fakes out there so some people are comforted by slabbed authenticated coins, but if you buy from reputable dealers you have basically nothing to worry about.

Thanks, that's one of my favorites, a 11g stater from Aspendos in modern day turkey from around 300BC. The triskelion was the symbol of the city and was painted on the shields of their soldiers, and their slingers were among the most feared and respected in that part of the world and were widely sought out as mercenaries so the coin honors and enshrines their soldiers by depicting one holding his sling loaded with a lead "bullet" over his head, about to swing and throw it. I also have a lead sling bullet embossed with the triskelion symbol, likely lobbed by a slinger from Aspendos just like the man immortalized on their coins. The bullets are much more rare than the staters, and when together the bullet and coin convey a story far greater than they do apart.

This remind me about the spaniard cob arbitrage from France>USA, forgot to tell you i scored few 2 & 4 reales who will show up on monday at home.
Prices weren't as interesting as i thought, but compared to US craziness i still think i did decent.
I'll post few pics right after. But first look at who showed up in the mailbox. Fantastic condition, a 2R from Mexico mint, 1774. There is a bit of dirt in the crown & coat of arm, but otherwise i was dumbfounded when i got it in hand. The original brilliant is still there, and the obverse featuring Carlos III is as beautiful.
40 fucking bux, almost felt guilty for the clueless old lady who sent me this.

Settled for the cheapest plastic pocket sheets (30x slots per page and 20x slots for the large coins), but apparently i shouldn't because it leak some chems over the years. I took some acid-free PVC but from what i read it's just an advertisement formula.
For the most precious ones i have rigid capsules with foam rings so they don't move.
Some others are simply laying around on the shelves, enjoying some fresh air kek.

Fuckin' awesome coin man, if I were to bet I'd wager coins like a 2R changed hands and circulated a lot more than the 8R dollars, so to find one from the 1770s in such beautiful condition is very lucky. I don't know what design features coin graders study to determine condition, and I'm not sure if the "U" in the "PLUS" (VLTRA) ribbon is worn or just weakly/insufficiently struck but wouldn't be surprised if it's some kind of AU 50+. $40 was a steal for that, well done brotha!

This promise to be glorious. I'd love to have a room dedicated to this, with long tables supporting individual wood casings, wrapped in scarlet velours, protected with large glass windows you can open. And a bunch of lights with a flexible cable you can move as you please.
I have vivid memories of a tiny museum (tower of London?) in London with a room dedicated to medieval coinage, i was probably around 10 but i still remember it as if it was yesterday.
The smell of the lacquered wood, the creaking of the old wood flooring, the yellow, almost subdued lightning, only focused on the coins. I was feeling like at home, but a home i've never have been too. A kind of victorian nostalgia.
I want to go back there looking like Mortimer : nice suit, heating a pipe and having sophisticated conversations about monetary policies with the pmg frens.

I've felt this feel too man, not in Europe but in venerable 18th century structures still standing on ancient farmsteads or in the hearts of colonial era cities, like in old Philadelphia or the French Quarter of New Orleans. It's so completely comfy it's intoxicating, and unusually historically or temporally "centering" or "grounding" if that makes sense; instead of feeling kinda rootless and disconnected as in the fake sovlless plastic parts of the world places like that help you triangulate your location in the present moment relative to the past and to the future.

Regarding shapes, I believe the triangular Bank token I posted is the only triangular token from the town, out of about 400 different token varieties. Lots of different sizes and shapes were used. Round was by far the most common though, and pre-prohibition round tokens from my area ranged from 18-38mm in diameter, with 24mm being most common.
