Why has American-English all of a sudden become such an international norm? Have people forgotten where the language came from?

Everyone speaks American English because most media uses it. I can't really blame them though. If I learnt a language I'd go for the dialect most people speak

Internet and TV have made both Americans and Brits borrow phrases and ways of pronouncing words from each-other, american English and UK English are really not that different at all just a few strange mannerisms that can catch you off guard or trigger certain people about spelling but at the end of the day we can still understand each other.
