Obviously, one of the major topics of discussion are the validity of the Richat Structure Hypothesis. It is hypothesized that the difference in the height of the land in north Africa may have been greatly altered by one or several major impacts that disrupted the crust of the earth in this region (and others). North Africa may have risen approximately 470 meters during the later stages of the Younger Dryas in much the same way that the crust of Europe was depressed during the ice age.
Another possibility is that Atlantis may actually have been "America." There is evidence that the Solutrean people of ancient coastal Europe migrated across the ice (hunting whales and seals) to America. There they advanced to a metal smiting civilization based around the Great Lakes. This is evidenced by the roughly 1 billion tons of copper that was mined in the great Lakes region and turned into tools. However, the vast majority of this copper is unaccounted for and it is hypothesized that it was shipped to the Old World in the 2nd and 1st millennium BC to fuel the Bronze Age civilizations of the Rhodes, Knossos, the Levant, and Crete. This may have occurred even earlier than is commonly believed.
