I'd really like for there to be something truly great for Rei in these new movies, but there isn't, 2.0 only held promise for it that no longer exists.
There has been built a whole new setting in the future of which Rei has no part in, but to be Gendo's mindless slave through the Ayanami-series. I'm not OK with that.

I'm not sure what Anno wants us to think, but I know what Anno has done at least.

Since he doesn't seem very fond of Rei as a character, it's plausible that everything he's done with Rei thus far has been to sabotage the character.
