On the face of it, being the pilot of a giant biomech inhabited by your mom's soul, getting adulation from those around you, saving the world, etc. Etc. Sounds great. But then you remember that you won't be in Unit 01, so from the perspective of Gendo you're completely expendable. The best you could hope for is losing several limbs like Toji; the worst is ending up mind raped, suicidally depressed, molested by one of your colleagues, and then violently dismembered and cannibalised.
