van Bonin is based on German ace Hubertus van Bonin. He served in the Spanish Civil war and WWII, achieving 77 aerial victories and earning the Knight's Cross. In 1940 he was part of the Battle of Britain. In 1941-42 he served on the Eastern Front with JG-52. He was given command of JG-54 in 1943. During Kursk, van Bonin and JG-54 supported the northern pincer, while Rall and JG-52 supported the southern pincer.
van Bonin died in combat in December 1943. The legend is that he was outnumbered 6 to 1 in his final dogfight.
