My opinion at the moment is that traction is impossible unless the "religion" is framed in terms that provides an immediate benefit to the individual. "Can I use this today in my life?" That is needed. It is also unfortunate that the characterization is rather vague and unspecified; it has actually proven difficult to use the character as a frame of reference because of the innate generality and circumstantial nature of the character's use in the writing.
