I think the important thing to take away from this discussion is that Hanako's character is very inconsistently defined due to the awful writing of her route. Before the route even released, I personally thought I might write up a fanfiction where it was revealed she had a Facebook with only 2 or 3 friends, being Lilly, Akira, and maybe Hisao. I knew, though, that someone so shy wouldn't flaunt how few friends they have; it's not exactly an accomplishment, so it would have to come from Hisao noticing she left her computer on that page or something. However, in her route, she willingly gives up that exact info when adding him as a cellphone contact. The only reason to do that would be to seem pathetic. But she doesn't want to seem pathetic? This also ties back to the earlier comment an anon made of her wanting to disappear, mentioning that, a cry for help. And even at the very very end, she's supposed to be empowered or something, but she has to be told to speak. The writers want you to feel all sad for her even at the cost of destroying her character. And then, they never bother to rebuild it either. The route is so short and so little happens it's basically a practical joke; you don't get to spend time with her and learn who she is outside of those contradictory and unimportant things early on, and as a result nobody really gets her. This is also the cause of so many "projection" accusations some of you might be familiar with, since Hanako is nearly a blank slate otherwise.
Other comments about her being fetishized also stem from her route's awful writing. That one scene, the worst scene in the game, comes out of absolutely nowhere with no buildup and no rhyme or reason. And to top it off it's excessively cold and explicit. Even sleazy eroges have more respect than that.
So, somewhat obviously, the conclusions people draw from how she's written (or rather, not written) influence the importance they see in her scars, which is what started this whole discussion.
