I have also come to understand better Shinji and somehow I could relate to him in some aspects. Nonetheless I still hold some kind of aversion against him and I definitely consider he's far from being worthy of Asuka.
She does deserve someone better and more valuable to be with her and help to heal her soul, injured after all she's been through from her childhood.
