>>2168101>Rei is a prominent, multilayered main character we spend lots of time with.Is she now? The Rebuilds have been doing the exact opposite. It focuses more on what Rei IS by second-hand account than what Rei does, thinks, or even feels!
2.0 makes her "poka-poka", and then what? Where's the monologue? Where's Rei being Rei, where is Rei confronting herself, where is ANYTHING at all?
3.0 makes that all impossible. There's not even a continuation of what 2.0 started.
We've come to the point where it's more important for Rei to be locked away in a tiny box named "Yui" than it is to have her be a character!
Rei doesn't get to even be in the third movie! She's locked away, like who else again? Yui! Inside EVA01, and you want her out don'tcha? Well there's people who want Yui out too now.
"Yui" has become a shadow not just hanging over Rei but who is also threatening to engulf the entire character.
Now, Rei doesn't even know anything. She doesn't think anything, she doesn't even take her EVA to be the savior for others, she doesn't throw the Lance of Longinus, she does absolutely nothing because she's inside EVA01. The "replacement" is a joke of intentionally bad characterization that any random episode of 60's star trek did miles better.
Yui is like poison to Rei. It was bad enough when they didn't even mention it. Rei could be so much more than just a clone. Don't kid yourself, it's not because "you know" Gendo cares for Yui that Yui's surname changed. It's purely because they want to make Rei less relevant, a "backstory blip" that is somehow larger than Rei.
>>2168118To be fair, we all have a strange obsession with this topic.
Rei is being more or less ripped apart right in front of us when we all have enormous expectations for the character. Even if you say you don't, at least it shouldn't be worse than the series, right? Even if it's worse, it shouldn't be this bad, right?
