(which She was because in EVA humans/humanity came from Lilith) But there's also that "schizo" aspect about Rei and those pills. Schozophrenia being an illness of hallucinations, but in reality Rei did indeed see things that were real, they weren't figments of Her imagination. She was fed these pills to be obedient. Who knows? Maybe they are the reason why She remembers only specific parts and not the full story about the last clone before Her. For NERV/Gendo Rei was a tool with a mind of it's own just like EVA Unit 01. Something that could turn against them at any moment. Just like it happenned in EoE. They had to keep supressing Her nature so She doesn't consume humanity "at the wrong moment". Gendo wanted to use Instrumentality for his own desires. Instrumentality could've happened at any moment, really. I guess, maybe all of the Angels had to be eliminated so there's no interference with the Ritual of Instrumentality, but I don't think GNR would have any problem.
