When compared to the original, 3.33 is an insult to that character, and thematically completely denies it's freedom or importance as a character with Rei Q.
Now as fans, the Rei in 3.33 and Rebuild just lacks everything the original had except for the scenes that are lifted from the original. In a setting where everything is new and there is an emphasis on making cool EVA's, fights etc.... Rei is not present at all.
It would seem that Rebuild's entire purpose is to ruin Rei based on what we've seen so far of it. It's deeply disappointing and insulting to the character and it's fans, to the point that at all liking 3.33 and Rei Q excludes you from calling yourself a Rei fan.
