I am rewatching Eva right now (trying the original broadcast version --full with sponsor messages after OPs-- for the first time). I had forgotten just how awful episodes 3 and 7 to 12 are. The monster of the week fights are so stupid (the fights and design of the angels is way too fucking convenient in these episodes). I found myself wanting to skip through most of the episode just to get to the character focused parts in it. I think I agree with Anno: episode 6 was too soon. The Ramiel fight ruined every angel fight until episode 16 when the psychological aspect made the angels interesting again.
Also, there is a lot less Rei in episodes 1 to 6 than I remembered. And likewise a lot more of her in episodes 9 to 13. I thought I didn't enjoy this part of the series due to Asuka before, but this rewatch made me realise it's actually the awful writing outside the character-focused scenes sprinkled throughout.
I finally understand why /m/ shits on this series now. The mecha and sci-fi elements in it are B-movie garbage.
At least Rei is still nice. And... Asuka wasn't as annoying as I remembered her to be.
