All I said is that she is the second most prominent character after Shinji and that their relationship is one of the central threads of the story, Rei for example being the reason why Shinji accepts to pilot Eva (just as in the TV series) and continues doing it. All of this is fact. Gendo even says at one point in 1.0 that they have to get Rei and Shinji close because it is instrumental to their plans.
