This is the 21st century; The lives of chicks go on even if sme dudes aren't there. Asuka's life sure went on big time, because postapocalyptic wasteland!
If Asuka herself can realize that she doesn't need to posses him for them to be friends, why can't you?
There are other ways to care about someone than teenage lust.
That said, the mere fact that we can argue about this proves that 2.0 was NOT a suggar fest for the asukafags; Rei is more of a main character in it than Asuka is, with Asuka, Misato and Mari hanging on in about the same secondary tier; and the main character status is NOt revoced by Q, she's mentioned in every other scene.
This just happens to be the "Rei hiatus movie" in the same way 1.0 was the "Asuka not yet arrived movie".
Rei Q gets to do a little action towards the end, but for the most part, she's subsidiary to showing things about "our" Rei - a tool used for her sake, if you will.
